Here it is, the post you have all been waiting for**: The Philanthropy Network Blog’s Official Predictions for 2022!
OK, some of these predictions are absolutely serious. Others not so much, though I think that even the most casual reader will be able to tell the difference.
So without further delay, here are The Philanthropy Network’s Ten predictions for 2022:
Prediction #1: MacKenzie Bezos will continue to embarrass her fellow billionaires with more extraordinary acts of generosity totaling over $20B in 2022 alone, including at least one donation of at least $1B to a single organization.
Prediction #2: Fundraising salaries will increase at an annualized rate of over 8%, due to extreme turnover, retirements, asset growth among the wealthiest, and a shortage of fundraising talent.
Prediction #3: A future episode of the A&E series “Hoarders” will feature Elon Musk swimming in a giant pile of money and shouting, “Mine, mine, it’s all mine!”
Prediction #4: COVID will accelerate the transition to virtual fundraising offices and teams, further decoupling one’s job from one’s location. This trend started before the pandemic, briefly showed signs of slowing down, but now that COVID is becoming endemic, flexible, remote work will become the default norm, not the exception.
Prediction #5: Despite our hopes for the contrary, Americans will not become more generous and total charitable giving will remain below 2% of US GDP.
Prediction #6: Damien Lewis and Paul Giamatti’s characters on the Showtime series, "BILLIONS” stop bickering and start a foundation dedicated to eliminating homelessness in New York and simultaneously taking up a raging mahjong habit.
Prediction #7: This year will be the 1st year in history when an individual commits $2B to a single institution, rather than directing these funds into his or her personal foundation.
Prediction #8: Another Varsity Blues scandal will erupt in higher education, but this time it will not be driven by undergraduate admissions decisions, but through the use of philanthropic donations to gain access to seed-stage investments.
Prediction #9: A new altcoin will emerge - “Donatium” - that immediately turns into funding for the food insecure when the owner’s stake in the coin exceeds $1,000,000.
and finally…
Prediction #10: Philanthropic giving in the US will reach $500B in total donations for the 1st time in history, proving that even when our Country is turning into a burning dumpster fire, Americans are still able to find their better angels.
p.s. **And by “you all” I really just mean “My Mom”.
